Explore answers to frequently asked questions about owning and living on an off-grid farm in Central Portugal.

Hay Making in early Summer 2024 which produced around 55 hay bales, costing 1 Euro each to process, which are used as bedding and feed for the livestock.

If the place is so fantastic, why are you selling up?

15 years is a long time. during that period the owners have completed the majority of their vision and also had the opportunity to enjoy the outcome of their hard work, but now they are ready to take on a new challenge and want to be able to put all their efforts into this.

Is the property totally off-grid?

Yes is the simple answer, but of course we live in a connected world and we are also not able to grow or produce everything that we need to have a comfortable life. All the Water, energy and some of the food we consume is sourced from the farm, but we also buy food, building materials and there is not yet a good way to produce your own internet, so this arrives via 5G 🙂

Can I grow my own food on this farm?

Absolutely! Food, including fruits, vegetables, wine is already produced here and there is lots of land which is mostly used for grazing and hay which could also be brought back into productive use.

How close is the nearest neighbour?

While we are surrounded by other active small holdings, none of them is urban or has a liveable building on them, so the nearest neighbour is perhaps 1km away and handily he is a mechanic.

Is the energy system new?

Most of the energy system is around 8 years old, including the batteries and the solar panels and the Victron inverter – the micro-hydroelectric system and its charge controller are around 7 years old. The batteries have an expected life of 1200 cycles, and while this is hard ro count, this has been extended due to the hydroelectric system running on average 8 months a year, which reduces these cycles and their depth. No guarantee is offered for how long the batteries or electrical system will last, but it is in daily use currently.

What the dimensions of the buildings on the property?

We have produced a series of simple floor plans showing approximated exterior dimensions of the main house, the cottage, the adge and the workshop / carport on the documents page.

Does the property have an energy efficiency certificate?

The main building has a recent and valid energy efficiency rating of “B-” – taken in 2024 which can be found on the documents page.
